Parking on Campus and at J.J. Pickle Research Campus

Like most universities, a parking permit is required to park on campus. There are several different parking permit options for students. The most highly recommended for graduate students is the A parking permit which allows for the most flexibility for parking near the Cockrell School of Engineering and at ARL. The least expensive parking option for students is obtaining a C parking permit. There is metered parking available on Dean Keaton St., San Jacinto Blvd. and Guadalupe St., as well as the Speedway Garage. For student parking at ARL, there is a parking lot North of the McKinney wing off of Read Granberry Trail that allows parking permits C and up. As with most universities, parking is very limited and it’s always best to plan ahead or even better to use public transportation.

Public Transportation

Students find the city’s MetroRapid Transit Bus to be the most useful when it comes to public transit in the city. The MetroRapid Transit 801 and 803 are modern, air conditioned buses that provide free wifi and run every 15-20 minutes on weekdays and 20-30 minutes on weekends. The 803 Rapid is most used by students in acoustics to travel from the university campus downtown to the J.J. Pickle Research Campus up north (where ARL is located). Students carrying a student ID card can ride the Rapid (or any other public transportation in Austin) for free.
